Viasole

What if we could charge our electric vehicles smartly?

EDF is behind the Viasole project, a smart charging system designed to power electric vehicles using renewable energy, and offer smart energy management solutions.

THE CONTEXT

When it comes to energy, Corsica boasts some unusual solutions connected to insularity. To reduce its carbon footprint, it has to manage its energy production, distribution and consumption from the beginning to the end of chain. The island is serious about respecting its natural environment and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

With this in mind, EDF is behind the Viasole project, a smart charging system designed to power electric vehicles using renewable energy, and offer smart energy management solutions.

THE CONCEPT

Launched in 2013, Viasole is a smart system that lets you charge an electric vehicle for going on its rounds (to deliver mail) using solar power. Thanks to a battery, the Viasole system charges the vehicle according to the quality of the network and local photovoltaic production, whilst also respecting the user’s needs (distance, times).  This made-to-measure charging system means that energy is not wasted but the user’s needs are met.

INITIAL FEEDBACK

One year after its launch, Viasole has demonstrated that optimising charging works. Despite the high-carbon energy mix in Corsica, Viasole is reducing the CO2 content of its charges by adopting a smart management system.

This project is in the process of being replicated in La Réunion, on a slightly larger scale (3 sites, 3 charging stations, 3 vehicles).
